At Obumu, we believe design should touch hearts and transform lives. That’s why we’re proud to partner with Akola, a globally-inspired jewelry brand that empowers women in Uganda through craftsmanship and economic opportunity.

Akola’s signature lies in their stunning use of Ankole cow horn, a natural by-product of Uganda’s rural food system. Rather than wasting it, Akola's artisans ethically source, boil, carve, and polish the horn by hand, transforming it into striking jewelry pieces that are as unique as the women who create them. No two bangles, earrings, or pendants are ever the same — each one is shaped by nature and perfected by skill.

But Akola is more than just design. The word "Akola" means “she works” in a local Ugandan dialect, and that meaning echoes through everything they do. By offering life-changing job opportunities to women in some of Uganda’s most underserved regions, Akola helps women keep their children in school, lead in their communities, and build a path toward lasting independence.

Obumu is launching its partnership with Akola through a curated jewelry collection, with plans to introduce co-designed pieces in the near future. As our relationship grows, we’ll also bring Akola’s unique home goods — rooted in the same values of ethical sourcing, elegance, and storytelling — into the Obumu family.

A portion of Akola’s profits is reinvested into local training centers, education programs, savings and loan associations, and holistic health initiatives — from maternal care to family planning and leadership development.

Akola’s Founder
Akola was founded by Brittany Merrill Underwood, whose journey began with a powerful encounter in Uganda. Her decision to shift from charity to sustainable employment models laid the foundation for what Akola is today — a mission-driven brand that merges fashion, dignity, and impact.

At Obumu, we are honored to walk alongside Akola in this journey —because when women work, communities thrive.
